| GLOSSARY
OF TERMS |
Standard
Construction: |
Refers
to the most common weaving construction, the "lay-out",
used at the mill to achieve the desired weight of
the fabric. It is also possible to change this construction
by changing the yarns without compromising the weight
of the fabric. |
Selvedge: |
The
edges of the fabric - mostly defined by the loom
in which the fabric is woven. Selvedge could be
"leno/fringe", "tucked-in",
"woven/closed" etc. |
Warp: |
The
"vertical" side of the fabric. Refers
to the yarns running parallel to the selvedge of
the fabric. |
Fill: |
The
"horizontal" side of the fabric. Refers
to the yarns running perpendicular to the selvedge
of the fabric. |
Weave: |
The
interlacing of a "warp" & "fill"
yarn in a definite pattern. The possibilities are
in-numerous eg., plain weave, Bull Denim, Twills,
Jacquards, Hopsack, etc. |
Thread
/ Sq. Inc: |
Refers
to the number of yarns per sq. inch in the "warp"
& "fill" of the fabric. eg., 84 x
28 means that there are 84 yarns/sq.inch in the
"warp" direction & 28 yarns/sq.inch
in the "fill" |
Thread
Size: |
The
size of yarns used in "warp" & "fill".
If more than one yarn is used in either in the warp
or fill or both, the textile industry uses the following
method of describing the construction:
| a. |
a.
For the warp, the count (a standard used to
define the thickness of the yarns) of the
yarn is mentioned & a "/" follows
it. |
| b. |
b.
b. If more than one yarn is used in the warp,
the total # of yarns is mentioned. |
| c. |
c.
The above procedure is repeated for the fill.
eg., 12/2 x 12/2 means. |
| 1. |
2
yarns of 12 count each have been twisted (plied)
together in the warp. |
| 2. |
2
yards of 12 count each have been twiseted
(plied) together in the fill. In general,
as the number on the yarn count goes up, the
thickness of the yarn goes down and vice versa.
eg., A yarn having a count of 6 is thicker
than a yarn having a count of 14. |
